It's Monday. What are you reading?
I probably won't read as much this week as I usually do, since I'm spending much of the week in Boston attending the AWP Writing Conference. But here are the books I'm working on right now:
1. Sweet Tooth, by Ian McEwan
2. The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child, by Donalyn Miller
3. Glorybound, by Jessie Van Eerden
4. On the Incarnation, by St. Athanasius
I've almost finished The Book Whisperer. I've read it before, but I had checked it out from the library, so I had to buy my own copy so that I could mark it up. It's a valuable resource for teachers of English/Reading. While it's written for K-12 teachers, I'm hoping to adapt some of the techniques for my college classes. The basic premise: teachers should let students select their own books to read, in order to develop in them a love of reading.

I just started and finished "Alice Bliss" by Laura Harrington yesterday. I loved it. It is set in 2006 and is written from the perspective of a 15 year old girl whose father is called up from the Army Reserves to active duty in Iraq. I had to read it with some tissues since I lost my Dad last year, so anything about the relationship of a daughter with her father gets to me. Really poignant book.
ReplyDeleteI've been stuck on Beautiful Creatures since last week. I like the book, but there hasn't been all that much time for reading this week, and I've been kind of frustrated trying. I must be a slow reader.
ReplyDeleteBesides, keeping up a blog is so time consuming!
How's Sweet Tooth? I haven't read it but I do like McEwan.
I'm not sure yet what I think of Sweet Tooth. I've read a couple chapters and I'll keep reading, but I'm having a hard time getting into it. It's the first McEwan book I've tried.
